The Apple iBook G4
Apple iBook G4 Review: This 12-inch Apple iBook runs the very smooth OS-X Panther operating system. Its' not the fastest notebook in the world, but the iBook G4 provides all the performance, connectivity, and software that students and budget-conscious shoppers need in a small, attractive (pure white) package.
The PowerPC G4 processor runs at only 1.0GHz, but it's so efficiently designed that it offers performance equivalent to a 2.0GHz Pentium 4. The addition of some great software such as iTunes, iPhoto, and iMovie make this a pleasure to use for multiple applications.
The small 12-inch screen has some advantages. First, it allows the form factor to be very compact. This is one laptop that you can easily carry with you, but the frame is large enough to accomadate a full-sized keyboard. The large touchpad will give you great control over your applications.
The second advantage of this smaller display is that it doesn't draw that much power. The display is crisp and bright; a real plus if you enjoy watching DVD movies. Speaking of DVD's, the DVD ROM drive is a combination unit that uses a unique slot-loading system instead of the regular tray system.
The only drawback to this system is the lack of a floppy drive or media card slot.
Again, this could be resolved by purchasing an inexpensive USB jump drive for doing fast backups of files or other data.
Apple offers only 90 days of toll-free tech support on this system, but it does provide a standard 1 year parts and labor warranty. Considering the budget-friendly price of this notebook, the Apple iBook G4 delivers a great combination of style and performance.
